Money magazine has listed some real cheap brokers based on criteria that most new or professional traders are lookng for .. so all u have to do is choose the one that suits you.

From Money Magazine, December 2006

Gold winner: Netwealth

You really have to hand it to Netwealth — the discount broker has scored gold in this category for the sixth consecutive year.

Netwealth has a budget price tag of just $17.99 for trades up to $5000 in value. That's as little as 0.36 percent of the value of your trade.

If you're looking to invest more, Netwealth's brokerage rise to $19.95 on trades between $5001 and $10,000 — still good value at as little as 0.19 percent brokerage.

As an execution-only service, Netwealth offers free standard research along with market depth announcement and watch lists. Subscribers looking for more detail can pay an extra $29 a month to access Netwealth's premium research service.

Dual silver winners are Amscot Online, charging $19.80 for trades to $22,500, and last year's runner-up Avcol Stockbroking, also charging brokerage of $19.80 though on trades up to $10,000.

Amscot is the online discount broking arm of State One Stockbroking, a full-service broking firm based in Sydney and Perth. And in a repeat performance of last year, online trading giants CommSec and Sanford Securities share bronze, both charging $19.95 on share trades up to $10,000.

Your order goes straight down the middle

These days Straight Through Processing (STP) is offered by virtually all online brokers. Your share trade is automatically placed directly into the sharemarket with no manual intervention. It's replaced the method of previous years where orders were collated and processed, often manually, in a single batch.

The big plus of STP is the speed of processing — your share order is almost instantaneous. Delays may occasionally occur where an STP filter is breached, making it necessary for an operator with your broking firm to review the order. This is rare and most orders are completed without delay. The downside of turbocharged processing is that once the order is executed you have little chance to alter it. It's extremely important to check your order carefully, reading all the fields before sending it down the line. A simple mistake could be costly and therefore is is necesary to be always aware of the basicss.
